The Simpson College men’s wrestling team took a unique step forward in their preseason preparation with an intense and inspiring leadership and mindset training session hosted by Advanced Team Leadership. The training was led by Rich Slavin, Assistant Chief of Police for the Scottsdale Police Department, and Naomi Keller, a member of the U.S. Department of Justice and part of the Salt Lake City Crisis Negotiation Team.
Slavin, an Air Force veteran and former SWAT commander who served on over 600 missions, brought decades of real-world experience in high-stakes environments to the Storm. Keller, with her background in crisis negotiation, shared valuable lessons in communication, composure, and decision-making under pressure. Together, they connected the dots between the tactical world and the world of wrestling — highlighting the deep similarities in combat mindset, team leadership, and living life as a warrior.
One of the highlights of the day was the chance for the team to tackle the SWAT obstacle course, a grueling test of strength, speed, and grit. To qualify for SWAT school, candidates must complete the course in under six minutes — and the Storm embraced the challenge with determination and enthusiasm.
The lessons learned from this training go far beyond the mat. The experience reinforced the importance of discipline, teamwork, and resilience — qualities that will serve as powerful motivators throughout the upcoming season.
Simpson Wrestling is grateful to Advanced Team Leadership, Rich Slavin, and Naomi Keller for sharing their expertise and helping prepare the Storm to compete — and lead — like warriors.
